Google and Facebook India Compliance Reports on the Order by Court to Remove Offensive Content

Certain WebPages have been removed from the Internet by Google India, fulfilling the court’s order that was given on December 24, 2011. On Monday, Google India informed the trial court that the order that was given by the court to Google India and 21 other websites to remove any objectionable content (photographs, videos or texts) that may hurt the religious sentiments of the people, has been taken care of. On the other hand, Facebook India also came up with its compliance report before additional civil judge Praveen Singh, stating that the servers that host the website (www.facebook.com located in the United States) are not controlled or operated here.

On 24th of December, 2011, this order was passed, when a man filed a civil case against “anti-religious” or “anti-social” content like photographs, text and videos being displayed on these sites that may hurt religious sentiments. Google and other 21 social networking sites were then asked to remove the objectionable content from their sites and were even asked to file their compliance reports. Facebook and Google India successfully filed their compliance reports and obeyed the orders by removing such objectionable content. However, Yahoo! and Microsoft presented their applications in order to remove their names from this civil complaint, stating that they are not into webcasting any objectionable content. The court, after hearing the application, has ordered Yahoo! and Microsoft to come up with their compliance report within 15 days from the date of the order, and the rest of the arguments were fixed for March 1, 2012. The judge has also made a query to Mufti Aijaz Arshad Qasmi, asking if blog services can be made a part of this case, so as to regulate any content posted on blogs by users.
