In a terrible incident, families of two women have refused to accept their bodies even after nine days of their horrific suicide – the reason being the two of them were in love with each other.

Sucheta Mondal was aged 19 and Swapna Mondal was just 20 years old at the time of their suicide. The girls hailed from the village of Sonachura in Nandigram area of East Midnapore district of West Bengal. The girls met and got smitten by each other few years back but in a society where same-sex relation is still not acceptable, the girls faced extreme hostility from the society as well as from their own family members.

After being tried in a village court they were ordered never to meet each other again and one of the girls, Sucheta was forcibly married off to a man in faraway village according to the police reports.

On February 19th, Sucheta returned to her parents’ house and somehow managed to re-establish contact with Swapna. The girls could not bear it anymore and they went out at night to end their lives by consuming poison.

Their bodies were finally fished out from a nearby paddy field the very next day. The bodies were tied to each other at the waist region and there was a suicide note attached where they told how they could not take it anymore being separated from each other and requested the villagers not to get annoyed.

The bodies were sent to Tamluk district for performing an autopsy and since then they had been left in a morgue as the family members have continuously been unwilling to accept them allegedly as per the command of the village head.

The police have decided to wait for a few days more after which they have promised to cremate the bodies.
